I think its more the nature of the music industry over on your end. The British music which is picked up by record labels in America and Canada is usually fitting with the trend of what your public is used to listening to and obviously British voices will only be liked by a certain group of people, whereas singers like Leona Lewis are chosen because theres not much distinction between your accents and her's. If you came over here you'd hear all sorts of British accents from artists, even in the mainstream.
Also it tends to only be southern British people that sing in that "Americanized" way. Up north (where I am) bands tend to sing in their speaking voices (like the Arctic Monkeys, Pigeon Detectives etc...)
