the expression xsquared-4x-21 can be written on the form (x-a)squared-b

find the values of a and b

the squared is the little 2...duuh, but it might be hard to read...help me, need to know how to do this by next tuesday

x^2 - 4x - 21
complete the square

hmm let me remember how to do this
(Take 1/2 the number before x (not x^2) and square it, and add it to the inside and subtract it from the outside
(x^2 - 4x + 4) - 21 - 4
(x-2)^2 - 25

help please this is calculus and involves limits i've been on these problems for like an hour

Evaluate the limit and indicate appropriate limit laws.

lim square root of u^4+3u+6
u->-2

Evaluate the limit

lim x^2+5x+4/x^2-3x-4
x->-4

Find the limit

lim t^2+2/t^3+t^2-1
t->-infinity

Re: General Homework Help Thread. (Math, Chem. English, History, Phsysics, etc) - 06-17-2008, 02:00 PM

can u clarify what you are saying the things are getting messy

i think firs the 1st one you are writing

lim x->-2 for (u^4 + 3u + 6)^(1/2)

well just plug in -2 for u, you get 4

you have to check the limit from the positive and negative side, but you get 4 regardless

2nd one i'm not positive what you are saying. Do you mean exactly as you posted, or (x^2+5x+4)/(x^2-3x-4)

and the 3rd one same thing

t^2+2/t^3+t^2-1

or

(t^2+2)/(t^3+t^2-1)

you could have also meant something complete different, but i'll assume you that the numerator and denominator were both in parenthesis

#2
plug it in again

((-4)^2 + 5(-4) + 4)/((-4)^2 - 3(-4) - 4). You get zero

3rd one think about it
(t^2 + 2). If t were negative infinity, negative infinity squared would be positive infinity. That would mean the numerator is a really huge number

(t^3 + t^2 - 1). You only pay attention to the variable with the highest power. Here it's t^3. So if you plug in negative infinity for t, you get an extremely small negative number like -9999999999999999... . So what happens when you divide a large number by a larger number? You get closer and closer to zero, so the limit goes to zero

for the first one i meant

lim x->-2 √u^4+3u+6

and the 2nd and 3rd i meant with the parenthesis

i appreciate the help and you made this a whole lot clearer for me
