Crude/Rude Diversity Documentary Ideas - 11-03-2008, 11:11 PM

So i need to start shooting a short film/documentary for my Diversity class final, and my teacher is one who would love something just ballsy, and the shameful truth. Somethin that exploits the weaknesses of stereotypes/profiling, etc in America.

What are some good topic ideas? i need something that sends a message

how race impacts/effects politics... interview random ppl and ask them how they feel with a black prez in the white house. give them all the facts about black ppl in america and see how they react.... you could start with sumthing like that.

You gotta find something that is pressing in your area. Like in SF there are tons of homeless people, gays, and despite our "tolerable" society, blacks are being pushed out of the city.

All of these subjects can relate to crude diversity. Find a population in your area that generally unaccepted and go film them. Show them respect they will often go on camera for free, if your serious about the project.

The hardest part is finding your own cities weakness. It could be something as stereotypical as blacks, or something less thought about like alcoholics or even the elderly. Tons of people are treated differently.

Start conversations, like normal ones, with black people you don't know, but say like "Excuse me nigga, can you tell me what time it is?"
Then have a black friend (if you have any) do the same thing to white people, but say "Excuse me cracka, can you tell me what time it is?"

Do this to a large sample group. Record how people react. Talk about the double standards in our society. You can also try a black saying nigga to another black or a white calling a white a cracka to compare.

Wear a bulletproof vest during the shoot.

Yeah the 2 biggest town weaknesses is the homeless, racial ignorance/intolerance of gays..

I was thinking because the town is predominately white, I could capture some real ignorance on cam. We also have SO many hippies because of the CU campus and the town in general, i could make a fool of them too lol.

but yeah homeless interviews wouldn't be bad at all.

i think the aforementioned notion of the 'fashion of race' is quite an intriguing idea. Something you can talk sh!t about for a long time and use big words to makes yous seems lieks does glassess peoples on those tv boxes.
