NEW YORK -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. against Manny Pacquiao.
A fight too big not to happen.
Bob Arum of Pacquiao promoter Top Rank said Thursday he's ready to negotiate a showdown between the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world, even suggesting potential locations and acknowledging that his Filipino star is willing to fight at 147 pounds.
Arum is waiting to hear from Golden Boy Promotions chief Richard Schaefer, who is acting as an intermediary between Top Rank and Mayweather Promotions, two companies with an acrimonious relationship. Schaefer has assisted Mayweather's team on his most recent fights.
"I have to have discussions with our side, and when the time is right, I will be talking to Bob," Schaefer told The Associated Press. "That will probably take place face to face, and I intend that to happen very shortly."
Mayweather's adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, left no doubt that Mayweather is ready to get in the ring with the man who many believe replaced him atop the pound-for-pound list.
"Floyd has made it perfectly clear to Team Mayweather and the rest of the world that he wants to give the fans what they want, and that's Mayweather versus Pacquiao," Ellerbe said.
It would be the biggest event in the sport since the days of Sugar Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns, when marquee fights were held under the stars in the outdoor arena at Caesar's Palace.
Perhaps it's fitting that Las Vegas officials and casino magnate Steve Wynn have already contacted Arum about staging Pacquiao-Mayweather on the Strip. One possibility would be to build a temporary, 30,000-seat outdoor arena on a vacant lot at the old Frontier, where there would be room for corporate hospitality tents and a Super Bowl-like atmosphere.
Another possibility is the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium. Team owner Jerry Jones has expressed interest in holding major events at his $1.2 billion palace.
Yankees chief operating officer Lonn Trost has said he'd like to see a fight at the new Yankee Stadium, across the street from the building where many of the sports' greatest battles were waged. The problem is that New York would tax a significant percentage of the revenue, especially for a fight that could generate up to $80 million in purses.
The notion that so many venues are vying for a fight that has yet to be made demonstrates how much attention the sport is receiving. Mayweather is coming off a victory over Juan Manuel Marquez that sold more than 1 million pay-per-views, and Pacquiao's stoppage of welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on Saturday night is expected to surpass 1.2 million.
"It's not so much that I give a damn whether this fight happens -- I don't -- and for me it's not the greatest experience doing a promotion with Floyd Mayweather," Arum said. "But not to do this fight would slow down the momentum of boxing."
Mainstream sponsors like Pepsi and Subway have shown interest in Pacquiao-Mayweather, one more sign the sport is returning to the popularity level it enjoyed in the early 1980s.
Pacquiao recently made the cover of Time magazine in Asia and is easily the most widely recognized figure in the Philippines, while Mayweather has a magnetic personality that has been showcased everywhere from the WWE to commercials with Bill Kurtis for AT&T.
One of the two has won Ring Magazine's Fighter of the Year the past three years.
"It has to happen. The stars are aligned and both fighters want it," said HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg. "If it doesn't, it would be devastating to the sport."
Mayweather issued a statement Monday in which he said, "If Manny Pacquiao wants to fight me, all he has to do is step up to the plate and say it himself."
"The world is much more intrigued by the thought of someone fighting me who can beat me," Mayweather added. "Manny Pacquiao's people have done a good job of creating an image of him to be this unbelievable fighter and now the so-called guy to beat me."
Already, the bluster has begun.
Arum promised that "my guy will make [Mayweather] fight, and once he fights, my guy will knock him out," while Ellerbe made it perfectly clear how he sees the fight shaking out.
"At the end of the day, we already know that Floyd is the best fighter in all of boxing, and if we're able to make a deal, he'll just be proving it to the world," Ellerbe said. "Nothing has changed. Pacquiao will be no different."

recently sat down with former world champion Zab "Super" Judah and got an update with what's going on with his career as of late. Judah is coming off of an impressive 2nd round knockout over Ubaldo Hernandez. Zab informs 8CN that next on his radar screen is the current IBF Jr Welterweight champion, Juan Urango. The former three time world champion is hoping to get the title shot in March 2010. Zab also breaks down the Pacquiao vs Cotto fight, and additionally predicts a Pacquiao split decision victory over Floyd Mayweather. Don't miss what else the Superman had to say in this exclusive interview.

8CN - Zab, thanks for joining

ZJ - Thanks for having me.

8CN - First and foremost, give us your thoughts on your recent 2nd round knockout over Ubaldo Hernandez.

ZJ - My performance being a year out of boxing? I give myself a B. Actually I give myself an A. I feel good about where I am at in my career. I feel good about my conditioning, my future plans, I feel great.

8CN - You got two wins back to back now, what are your plans next?

ZJ - I want to go after the champion, Juan Urango. He's a good champion, he brings a lot of excitement in the ring and it will be a good fight between me and him.

8CN - You have fought the best fighters in the world. Everybody is talking about Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather. Do you still see yourself in the mix of things?

ZJ - At this time I am just wanting to focus on Juan Urango, and focus on the IBF championship. I want to get myself in good conditioning, and once I get that title in my possession then I will focus on them other guys like Pacquiao and those other guys out there.

8CN - How do you see a fight between you and Urango playing out?

ZJ - I think as far as speed, I am faster than him. I think he will be surprised by my power. I already know that he is a strong fighter, so I am preparing for all the shots that he throws. I am preparing for that, and I will be ready.

8CN - Has your team started negotiations for this fight?

ZJ - Yes, my team started with this already. I have been getting some advice from Mr J Prince, so were just trying to make it work.

8CN - When would you like this fight to happen?

ZJ - March, early March.

8CN - You talked about being focused now, what was going on previously that made you not focused?

ZJ - There is no one thing, it's just an accumulation of things. I had too much time on my hands, I don't know, just being Zab Judah. I have my son in my life now and he is my life. My daughters are still there, and they are my world. I am living for someone else right now and that's my children. I am making them better people, that's my focus now.

8CN - That's the most intelligent thing that I have ever heard you say. A family will change a man.

ZJ - That's right.

8CN - Give me your thoughts on Pacquiao vs Cotto. Did you think that Pacquiao was going to be THAT dominant over Cotto?

ZJ - No, personally I thought Cotto would have gotten him late. But I did say that if Cotto didn't watch out for Pacquiao's speed that Manny would be a problem for him. Cotto never adjusted to Manny's speed. He didn't know what the Hell was going on since round one. Manny was throwing punches from angles, and so fast, left hand leads, upper cuts, Cotto never seen that before. I mean I was surprised, I must say.

8CN - You have been around a long time, and you have fought the best fighters in the world. Have you ever seen anybody do what Manny is doing?

ZJ - He's a very mentally focused person. I love what he's doing mentally, he has his mind made up that he's not going to get beat no matter what weight class he is in. The reason why I say that it's not impossible for him to get beat is that anything is possible. But, not just anyone can beat him, he's it right now. He is the legend of our time. They say that every 30 years or so someone comes along and does something like this.

8CN - How do you see Floyd doing against Pacquiao?

ZJ - It would be a good fight, but it won't be a shutout like he got against De La Hoya and Cotto. Mayweather has good defense, it will throw Pacquiao off. I also feel that it would be a 12 round split decision for Manny Pacquiao. I just feel if Pacquiao puts up his normal effort and it goes 12 rounds, they won't do that Mayweather nod ****, that's not going to happen.

8CN - Do you think Manny wins fair and square, or are you saying that Manny would get the nod because he's Manny Pacquiao?

ZJ - I think it will be close, but Floyd will go out with a bang. Floyd doesn't have the power to keep Manny off of him. I fought Floyd, I haven't fought Manny, but I watch him and he's a little force. He backed Cotto up the whole fight, *Cotto was in there doing those Salsa dances, I thought he was in there doing a tap dance or something (laughing)* I didn't know what the Hell he was doing.

8CN - How would you try to beat Manny Pacquiao?

ZJ - You can't let him come forward. You have to back him up with good combinations. Another thing, you have to have power to back him up with. If you don't have power, you are not going to back him up. He's a strong little mother fer, and he's fast, he's sharp. Right now I just want to stay off of the radar screen. I don't want nobody ducking me, I am the quiet storm that nobody see's right now.

8CN - Give me some closing thoughts Zab.

ZJ - I am going to take Juan Urango's title, believe that, let the world know that there will be a new IBF champion of the world. I need the belt in order to campaign back at 140 lbs. Juan, you're the next guy in the way. I want to thank my fans for being there. Shout out to the New York Yankee's, Brooklyn what up!
---End Quote---
I laughed hard at that. You'd think his the last person to make fun of 'dancing' after what Kostya did to him

Nogueira-Velasquez on for UFC 108

---Quote---
*A heavyweight showdown between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez has been confirmed for UFC 108 in Las Vegas*.
The possibility of the bout arose last week when Nogueira's manager talked about the fight to SportTV. MMAWeekly.com has since been able to confirm the bout with multiple sources, who say it will happen on Jan. 2.
After losing the interim UFC heavyweight title to Frank Mir at UFC 92, Nogueira (32-5-1) returned with an impressive victory over UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture at UFC 102 in August. The win immediately put his name back in the hat of contenders to the belt currently held by Brock Lesnar.
Velasquez (7-0) is coming off a dominating TKO stoppage of Ben Rothwell at UFC 104. Three years into the sport, Velasquez has made a quick rise to the top of the heavyweight division with five of his victories taking place in the Octagon and only one having gone to a decision.
Most felt that in his next bout Velasquez would face the winner of the title fight between UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. But when that fight was bumped off of the UFC 106 fight card, and a subsequent attempt to reschedule it for UFC 108 was derailed due to Lesnar suffering from a case of mononucleosis, it became apparent that Velasquez would have to wait too long for that fight to play out.
With much of the top tier of the UFC's roster already booked or on injured reserve, the promotion needed a high profile fight for its New Year's event. It hasn't yet been confirmed, but it is likely that Nogueira versus Velasquez will headline UFC 108 or at least attain co-main event status with the winner likely getting a shot at the winner of Lesnar and Carwin once that fight plays out.
UFC 108 also features a light heavyweight battle between Top 10 ranked fighters Rashad Evans, who is coming off of a stint as a coach on "The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights," and Brazilian striker Thiago Silva.

A heavyweight showdown between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez has been confirmed for UFC 108 in Las Vegas.
Just when the situation couldn't get any worse, it did.
When Brock Lesnar pulled out of UFC 106 due to illness, most everyone hoped that he had a severe case of influenza and would recover in time to defend his title against Shane Carwin at UFC 108 on Jan. 2 in Las Vegas.
The UFC even issued Lesnar and Carwin new bout agreements for UFC 108.
Carwin will still get his shot, but the latest news on Lesnar, that he has mononucleosis, will push it back even further, to an uncertain date.
"Guys, my manager, Jason Genet, just told me that UFC 108 is not happening. Brock has mono and what the UFC has told me is that I have earned the title shot, but I have to wait for the titleholder," Carwin wrote in the blog on his official website Wednesday night.
UFC president Dana White later confirmed Lesnar's diagnosis to Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, indicating that the UFC heavyweight champion would be unable to train for the next four to six weeks, effectively scrapping any chance at a Jan. 2 date.
The title bout is still uncertain until Lesnar's health improves.
"Our role now is to wait," Genet told MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday night.
With middleweight champion Anderson Silva and light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida on injured reserve, lightweight titleholder B.J. Penn booked for UFC 107, and welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre just getting back into the swing of training, that leaves UFC 108 with no main event and tickets going on sale in little more than a week.
Earlier on Wednesday, MMAWeekly.com reported that a heavyweight bout between former UFC interim champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cane Velasquez was in the works for UFC 108. With this latest update on Lesnar's health, the pressure may increase to make that fight happen

Pacquiao Calls out mayweather

LOS ANGELES -- Manny Pacquiao believes the biggest potential fight in boxing will never happen because Floyd Mayweather Jr. wants no part of him.
Pacquiao is training in Hollywood for his meeting with Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 in Las Vegas, but the pound-for-pound champion spared a moment Thursday to evaluate his chances of fighting Mayweather, the unbeaten pay-per-view king. Although the matchup almost certainly would be a financial bonanza for both fighters, Pacquiao thinks fans shouldn't hold their breath.
"I don't think it's going to happen," Pacquiao said. "I'm sure he doesn't want to fight."
“ Image: http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2007/0529/box_g_pacquiao_65.jpg I don't think it's going to happen. I'm sure he doesn't want to fight.
” -- Manny Pacquiao on the possibility of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather has been circumspect about his plans for his next bout, saying only that he has never ducked anybody and would consider any opponent. In his comeback bout from a 21-month layoff, Mayweather demolished Juan Manuel Marquez on Sept. 19 in a fight that generated more than 1 million pay-per-view buys.
Mayweather's advisers claim they haven't ruled out a bout with Pacquiao, likely among the world's few fighters who could match Money's speed. But the Filipino champion has surprisingly strong opinions about why it won't happen.
"Boxing for him is like a business," Pacquiao said. "He doesn't care about the people around him watching. He doesn't care if the fight is boring, as long as the fight is finished and he gets [plenty of] money. ... I want people to be happy. You have a big responsibility as a boxer."
If Mayweather and Pacquiao don't make a deal, Sugar Shane Mosley has been outspoken in his desire to fight Mayweather, even calling him out in the ring moments after his victory over Marquez. Mosley is slated to meet welterweight champion Andre Berto in Las Vegas in January.
After arriving in California last Saturday, Pacquiao has been ramping up his training regimen this week while also battling jet lag that forced him to sleep for about 20 hours on Wednesday, wiping out a day of training. Because of tax issues, Pacquiao's camp began in Manila and moved to Hollywood later than trainer Freddie Roach usually prefers.
"I'm not worried about it, because he's always known how to block everything out," Roach said. "If anybody can do it, he can."
Pacquiao looked fairly sharp while sparring 11 rounds Thursday at Roach's Wild Card Gym in front of a small group of spectators including Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest and his father, Ron Sr., both avid boxing fans and Pacquiao admirers.
Pacquiao will spar 12 rounds on Saturday before gradually scaling back in preparation for his trip to Las Vegas to meet Cotto, the once-beaten welterweight champion whose combination of size and strength will be unlike anything the former flyweight champion has faced. Cotto is in camp in Tampa. Fla., before traveling to the West Coast next week.
"I consider this one of the hardest fights in my boxing career," Pacquiao said.

Kelly Pavlik Close to edge

NEW YORK -- Kelly Pavlik's life was in peril.
An allergic reaction to medication had caused the middleweight champion's temperature to soar past 104 degrees, and his heart rate to 150 beats a minute. When he was finally admitted to the hospital, the sweat was pouring off his body, which had turned shades of red and purple.
An infectious diseases specialist at the Cleveland Clinic told his father, Mike Pavlik, that the 27-year-old fighter had better keep fighting. The outlook was grim.
"I'm not a medical man," Mike Pavlik said, "but he was really close to the edge that day."
[+] EnlargeImage: http://a.espncdn.com/photo/2009/1023/box_g_pavlik1_sw_300.jpg (http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=4589518#)Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images"I don't remember that day, that's how bad it was," Kelly Pavlik said of his allergic reaction. "They told me it was pretty serious. It was the worst form of reaction you could have."

What began as a small staph infection on the knuckle of his left hand, where Pavlik had received a cortisone injection, had somehow spiraled to this: A strapping young man who makes his living relentlessly pushing his body to the extreme was bedridden, his wife Samantha keeping vigil over him while doctors figured out what went wrong.
Pavlik says he doesn't remember everything that happened last month, only bits and pieces.
He recalls a doctor telling him that he wasn't going home right away, and that every step he took toward the emergency ward was more difficult than the last. He remembers his skin crawling, his heart feeling like it would jump right out of his chest.
He doesn't remember the steroids doctors gave him to make the reaction subside.
"I don't remember that day, that's how bad it was," Pavlik told The Associated Press. "They told me it was pretty serious. It was the worst form of reaction you could have."
It was also the lowest point in a summer of misfortune.
The staph infection appeared after Pavlik defeated Marco Antonio Rubio, a tough but woefully overmatched opponent, before an admiring crowd in Pavlik's hometown of Youngstown, Ohio.
He was playing basketball on a warm March day when the knuckle split open. After a few minutes, Pavlik looked down to see a colorless ooze where there should have been blood, and a trip to the doctor confirmed the bacteria.
A month went by and antibiotics weren't doing their job, so Pavlik had surgery in Youngstown to clean out the infection. When the stitches were removed, the hole was still there. Further tests revealed MRSA, a sometimes fatal strain of staph that resists broad-spectrum antibiotics.
"I was ready to say right there, chop the hand off," Pavlik said.
In the meantime, months of tough negotiations had resulted in an agreement between Pavlik and feared puncher Paul Williams. They would meet in early October in Atlantic City, with Pavlik guaranteed millions and both getting the HBO exposure every fighter covets.
The staph infection still wasn't getting better, though, and the fight was pushed back to Dec. 5. Williams and his promoter, Dan Goossen, were willing to work with Pavlik after seeing optimistic test results from the clinic. Doctors believed the infection would clear up and Pavlik could begin punching in mid-October, giving him time to prepare for the fight.
Then came the allergic reaction and trip to the hospital, just before Pavlik was supposed to leave for New Jersey and a news conference to officially announce the fight.
"We learned our lesson once already when he went into a fight not feeling well," Mike Pavlik said, referring to his son's loss to Bernard Hopkins, when he became ill a couple days before the bout. "And we vowed we wouldn't do it again."
Still, Pavlik said he felt obligated to go through with the Williams fight. People were counting on him, and he was told by doctors that he'd be fine, even if he wasn't so sure.
"Since I started training, it was in my mind the whole time," Pavlik said. "It feels stiff, I ain't able to hit anything. I think my trainer was waiting for the moment when it just closes, but there was just no way to do it."
The infection had cleared up, but the surgeries were keeping Pavlik from closing his left hand. On Wednesday, trainer Jack Loew finally called off the fight.
Losing out on a big payday, the hospital trips, the allergic reaction -- all of it was frustrating. What bothers Pavlik the most, though, is that some fans don't believe any of it.
There are rumors he doesn't want to fight Williams, or fight at all. That he's holding out for more money, or to take Jermain Taylor's place in the Super Six tournament. Those who once called him a working-class hope have turned their backs, which happens quickly and easily when you carry a small town on your broad shoulders.
"There's nothing you can do about it," Pavlik said. "I'll sleep, eat well at night. I know the truth. But my dad, the guys in camp who now what's going on, it's hard on them."
Williams will face another opponent on Dec. 5, and Pavlik hopes he'll be able to fight him early next year -- "I'll be nervous on the fifth," he said.
Until then, the middleweight champion is left to ponder his summer of misfortune.
"I want to fight, and people question because I've been inactive, but there's goals I want to accomplish," he said. "It does feel like wasted time, where I could be out accomplishing a lot. And one big fight could sum up that big accomplishment."
---End Quote---
