xbox 360 help

hey i bought my x box 360 last week and i want to transfer files on my computer to my 360's hard drive. When i tryed i unplugged the ethernet cable from my broadband and replaced it with the etherenet cable that connects ur xbox to ur computer(like it says in the manual) then i plugged the xbox to a power source and turned it on wen i did nothing loaded on my computer and a red light on my xbox started flashing on the power swith ring(the one that normally goes green) my xbox still works fine and stuff but why wont my computer detect the xbox and what does the red light mean im confused .
