UK, August 22, 2007 - Sony has confirmed its much-rumoured Freeview tuner for PlayStation 3 during its press conference at the Games Conference in Leipzig. Called PlayTV, the glasses case-sized black box connects to the PlayStation 3 via USB, turning the already well-equipped console into a true entertainment hub for the home.

Users will be able to watch live digital TV using the device as well as record shows direct to the PS3's hard drive, which they can then watch back either through the television or via a PSP, by connecting to the home console wirelessly over the internet (in much the same way as LocationFree TV). In addition the PlayTV box contains two TV tuners, enabling users to watch one programme while recording another.



The unit - which is compatible with digital channels across Europe - plugs into a standard TV aerial socket and has access to all the free-to-view digital channels - including, we hope, the Freeview HD channels planned for the coming months. Live television can be recorded on the fly and then watched back at will, plus there's a seven day electronic programme guide (EPG) that enables you to record a week's worth of television at the touch of a button.

From the brief demonstration made on stage the device looks both simple to set up - it won't take more than a few seconds to plug in - and easy to use, thanks to the user-friendly menus that work with both the SIXAXIS and Blu-ray remote. This simplicity is carried over into the media library too, where viewers can check out everything they've recorded from a simple visual-based menu system. Short 15-second clips allow users to check out what they're watching with ease.

Play TV will launch across Europe at the start of next year, its price still to be confirmed. We'll hopefully get our hands on a unit soon so expect a full write-up in the not to distant future.

I don't have dvr and don't feel like paying monthly, so this is great

I just hope it records to a format that's readable on pc and not some BS ps3 format.

But hey, I have no doubt someone will create a converter. ;)

I'm not sure. I hope so. Right now, I think that's for new Zealand, but they didn't go into specifics.

It's launching across Europe at the beginning of '08. Expect the U.S release to be simultaneous.
