Why do games get pushed back when they're finished? - 08-08-2009, 01:01 PM

I mean unless they only finished the first level they demoed of Splinter Cell, the game was completely finished. They shouldn't be allowed to put release dates on it unless they're 100% sure. This never happens to movies (it does, but not often). So many games got pushed back. Batman, Dragon Age, I Am Alive, Ghost Recon, Dark Void, Red Steel 2, BioShock 2, Mafia II and Red Dead Redemption. And these are all just recent push backs that move them into 2010.

Game companies should be charged if they move their date forwards or backwards.

I have no idea, but it pisses me off too. I'm assuming it has to do with scheduling. Much like a film, you dont want your game competing against another major hit game's release date. Who would dare release their game during the same time COD:MW2 comes out? It would be sales suicide. So that's part of the reason, finding the best time to maximize sales. But what's the other excuses? I don't know.

So avoid a basically open September, October, December release window, for a super crowded 2010 early line up... bad scheduling.

this may be the naive response to your question, but what if the product is actually not complete? When i say complete i mean all the small pandatic details that makes a game great, like small detail issues.

EG: Starcraft II is probably finished but blizzard want the game to be PERFECT.

Much like Venom said, they don't want to compete with all the other major releases. Re-scheduling to early 2010 is a bad idea aswell, I don't think anyone would be bothered buying a game in January 2010 after all these huge releases have come out. I know I wouldn't. I just buy the NBA 2K and Madden games, and that keeps me sane for an entire year.

Then why do no games come out in December? Check the last 3 years. Nothing good in December guaranteed. Conspiracy? I think so.

Well, that's the bad part about waiting, eventually the games suck. Take Spore as an example
