Sony announces new PS3 Slim, coming first week of Sept.

We know, we're as shocked as you are, which is to say, not at all: Sony has used the GamesCom stage in Cologne to announce the oh-so-tiny PS3 Slim. The good news is that the system sports both a slimmer form factor (33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter and 34 percent less power use) a 120GB hard drive and the tidy price tag of $299. The bad news? It boasts all the same features as the current PS3, which means still no backwards compatibility with your PS2 games.

If you've been holding off on buying a chunkier PS3 until the inevitable release of its slimmer little brother, your wait will finally end in September.

It will cost 300 euros here in Europe. The right time for me to buy one before the new GT gets out.

i like my big shiny one better, despite the size it is still a sexy beast and has backwards compatible

im not sure i don't think it has backward compatible. and im not sure if u can take out the hard drive and put ur own.

I've been waiting for a price drop and my parents wouldn't let me get a big ps3 because of the high power consumption. I don't really care about looks. It's still the same thing and I'm gonna buy a new ps2 eitherway so that backward compatibility isn't an issue.

ehhh the thing i hate about the ps3 is the size but i dont think it warrants me spending that much money on a new smaller one......i didnt know the power consumption was that high, i probably shouldnt leave my ps3 on 24/7 then lol

Wtf though, in the pictures, its not THAT smaller than the original. I was expecting some PS2 slimline ish

Ya i was looking at this a while ago, its the same weight so basically the same system just no backwards compatibility and the system itself doesn't look as good. Oh and they took away the option of downloading your own operating system so no linux :P

Not even that much smaller. Plus I would prefer the glossy PS3.
