Now I'm not an idiot I know it can't be done currently but if Microsoft and Sony wanted to could they make it possible for players that share a common video game but have different systems (xbox and ps3) to play against each other? What do you guys think?

If they wanted to, Yes.

But they don't.

It would take a fair bit of resources to accomplish it, i.e look at the Shadowrun. It is one of the few (only maybe) cross-platform games (PC & 360). From what I have read it was quite difficult to achieve even between two Microsoft platforms.

This. Added to the fact that both companies would need to do some serious coding or something along those lines to make both systems compatible with each other. It's definitely possible but I highly doubt it would ever happen.

If it was a dedicated host it would take no effort. Kind of like how you can play a game on a mac and PC and it's no problem. The only problem I would imagine would be if games like Call of Duty and Halo where every game has it's own host.

If they wanted to, all that it would take is one server that runs on a pc and then both of them could share the same data... But as someone said, they dont...

The reason is competition and wanting to have a monopoly over the game market, one company wants to beat another one without sharing the market...
