Comments : This is a rare find, with the Lakers at the twilight years of their 1980's mini-dynasty. The year was 1989, the last season of Kareem Abdul Jabbar's amazing career. He was a shell of his old self. Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Byron Scott and A.C.Green, on the other hand, were at the top of their games. Magic won the regular season MVP award and the Lakers cruised to a 57-25 record.
In 1988, Pat Riley had pushed the team hard in the regular season leaving the team with very little in the tank for the playoffs. The Lakers survived 3 straight 7-game series because they got lucky (in the classic game 5 against Utah and of course with Isiah Thomas getting injured in game 6 of the finals, right when the Pistons where ready to finish them off) and because they were smart and experienced enough to save themselves for the games they really had to win. So, in 1989 they coasted through the regular season and were fresh and ready for the playoffs.
They swept Portland in 3 in the first round, Seattle in 4 in the second round (coming back from 27 down in game 4) and Phoenix in 4 in the western conference finals. Of course every game of the Phoenix series was competitive and went down to the wire. But they had enough to finish the games and that was a testament to the great job they did that season preserving themselves for the playoffs. Unfortunately in the finals disaster struck : they lost Byron Scott to injury in the last practice before game 1 against Detroit and then Magic Johnson in the 3rd quarter of game 2. It was a brutally anticlimactic ending to a fabulous playoff run. But i guess fate owed the Pistons for their own misfortunes in 1987 and 1988...

I have uploaded 2 more game recaps from the 1991 Lakers. Search in pages 2,3 or 4 and you will find them. Thanks for your comments. It took me 3 hours to upload and write about those games and you are the first to write back.
