Comments : Another rare find, this time with the last great Lakers team from their glorious run from 1980 to 1991, when they reached the finals 9 times in 12 seasons. The year before the Lakers started a new era without their captain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar. In his place at center they started a rookie, Vlade Divac, who did a very good job that year and had a wonderful and long career in the NBA. Pat Riley went back to his old ways and milked 63 wins out of this mostly veteran team in the regular season, securing a coach of the year award for himself and his team's downfall in the playoffs. They lost to the young, hungry Suns who had learned their lesson from 1989 and demolished the Lakers 4-1 in the western conference semifinals. Pat Riley left that summer. He had lost the team with his stubborn ways - his relationship with most of his players was beyond repair.
In 1991, the Lakers hired a milder, more low-key coach in Mike Dunleavy. The front office realized that a veteran and savvy team doesn't need a disciplinarian - the players already knew what had to be done, especially Magic who was the coach on the floor. So they had a nice regular season and went to the playoffs hungry to get back to the finals. After disposing of dangerous Houston in the first round in 3 straight (but close) games, they faced the Warriors in the second round. It was a high-scoring, entertaining series with 2 of the games going to overtime and 2 more being decided in the end. Needless to say, Los Angeles lost only one of them and won the series 4 - 1.
