Game Story
WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Jerry Stackhouse heard Michael Jordan
loud and clear.
Stackhouse scored 31 points, including 15-of-15 from the line,to help lift the Washington Wizards to an important 106-105 victory over the Orlando Magic.
Jordan chastised his teammates for their lack of support and desire to win following the Wizards' 97-96 loss at New York on Sunday. Stackhouse, who also voiced some complaints with his teammates, had just five points in the contest.
This time, Stackhouse scored 13 points in the fourth quarter. He sank two free throws to give Washington the lead for good, 93-91, with 3:24 left, then added a three-point play and six free throws in the final 74 seconds, including a pair from the stripe that gave Washington a four-point lead with four seconds left.
Jordan scored 23 points, Larry Hughes added 20, Christian Laettner 13 and Brandon Haywood 11 for the Wizards, who moved one game behind Milwaukee for the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff berth and 1 1/2 back of the Magic.
Tracy McGrady had another a phenomenal game for Orlando, scoring 43 points - his 10th 40-point game of the season - on 16-of-26 shooting.Rookies Gordan Girieck and Drew Gooden added 14 and 12 points, respectively, for the Magic, who had won eight of their previous10 games. Both teams shot 53 percent from the field, but Orlando was11-of-20 from the arc while Washington was 0-of-2. However, the Wizards connected on 30-of-32 free throws while the Magic sank only 12-of-17.After Gooden dunked off a feed from Giricek to get Orlando within 100-99 with 19 seconds left, Stackhouse countered with two from the line less than a second later.McGrady then drove into the paint and fed Chris Whitney in the left corner for a game-tying shot, but the former Wizard threw up an airball amid heavy pressure. Stackhouse grabbed the rebound, was fouled and sank another pair from the stripe to give Washington a five-point lead. Washington outscored Orlando in the paint, 48-28. Neither team led by more than seven points in a contest that featured 20 ties and 12 lead changes
Barring a meeting in the playoffs, it was the last meetingbetween Jordan and McGrady. The 40-year-old Jordan announcedearlier this season that it would retire after completing histwo-year contract at the end of the campa But thanks largely to his teammates, Jordan got the victory.
