UK Vs. Kansas (12/09/78) -
08-08-2007, 03:35 AM
Down six with less than 30 seconds to go in OT – Kentucky faced only its third loss in Rupp Arena’s history. When it appeared that UK fans would open the sport section on Sunday morning reading of a Kentucky loss – exactly one year to the day that Adolph Rupp had passed away while his Wildcats had again defeated his alma-mater – a freshman sensation and a Junior All-American pulled victory out of the jaws of defeat.
On December 9, 1978, The fifth ranked Jayhawks from Kansas University played the 10th ranked University of Kentucky Wildcats in Rupp Arena. In the history of college basketball, no two programs had won more games than UK and KU. Kentucky was on a three game winning streak against Kansas in the series up to that point – and had won nine of the first ten games played between college basketball’s two Blue-Blood Programs. After this night, Kentucky would push their winning streak against Kansas to eleven games before losing in Lawrence in 1985.
As most know, KU has defeated the Wildcats three straight times in this series (UK leads 19-6), with Bill Self owning more wins in this series than any other Kansas coach all time. In fact, he owns half of the all-time KU wins in this lop-sided series. That includes legendary Phog Allen (0-1), Dick Harp (0-1), Larry Brown (1-2), Roy Williams (1-3) and -- Ted Owens.
