The Film Skool Dropoutz was originally founded to focus more on filmmaking and video editing than basketball and other sports mixes. Now, almost a year after the beginning, I'm taking the first step to that direction. Enter "Dinoman's Weekly After Effects Tips & Tricks".

This is a series of short tutorials on how to enhance your AE composition by adding some little things, touches that can make your motion graphics look more professional with little effort. I'm not providing instructions for complete intros or anything like that beacause it would lead to people making exactly similar copies of the effects.

These little tutes are intended mostly for beginners, who already know the basics, like how to start a new composition, add text and render the final output. This thread is not for questions about those things. In those cases you can PM me if you want help. Some tutorials can also be helpful to a little more advanced AE users.

I'll try to make one of these a week, but sometimes it can vary. And if you have criticism or suggestion on how to improve this please don't hesitate to let me know.

Dinoman's AE Tips & Tricks #1: The Scanlines

Something real basic just to get it started. Scanlines or whatever you want to call them are an easy yet effective way to add some flare to your title sequences. By adjusting the effect you can also create interesting backgrounds, like the one I used in this picture similar to the M2 forums bg.

Here are the three easy steps to add and adjust the scanlines:

Step 1: Add a Solid of the color you want (usually black) over the layers you want to be under the lines.

Step 2: Add the Venetian Blinds effect to the Solid. (Effect->Transition->Venetian Blinds) Adjust the parameters like this:

For a traditional interlaced effect:

Transition Completion: 50%
Direction: 90
Width: 4

Play with the sliders to achieve the effect you want. For example you get nice diagonal lines by making the direction 45 degrees.

Step 3: Add the finishing touches. You can make the lines fade away by adding a mask and feathering it, or make a nice dotted line demonstrated in the picture with a thin mask.

That's it, really easy as I said but hope it helps someone. Next time I'll try to make somthing more advanced. Please give comments and tell if it was helpful or useless, or if I suck so much at AE that I should quit making tutorials right away.

Bro you should ask a mod to sticky this, i hardly see people actively making tutorials in this section for a while so i think this thread deserves to be stickied.
