Angels start season with 3-0 shutout vs Oakland

Players of the game

Joe Saunders: 6 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K

Howie Kendrick 2-4, 1 HR, 2 Rbi's

Nice start to the season, hopefully we can continue to pitch well until Santana & Lackey get back

just watching the replay on tv now and the Angels are playing some good defense and some good work from Saunders and the other pitchers. My brother is an Angels fan, although we're both still learning the game and the players so he's pretty happy with the result

Quote:
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP)—Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people were killed Thursday by a suspected drunk driver just hours after the rookie made his first start of the season.

The Angels postponed Thursday night’s game with Oakland and players planned to gather to remember their teammate, manager Mike Scioscia said.

“It is a tragedy that will never be forgotten,” he said at an Angel Stadium news conference.

The 22-year-old Adenhart was a passenger in a silver Mitsubishi Eclipse that was broadsided in an intersection about 12:30 a.m. by a minivan that apparently ran a red light, police said.

The impact spun around both vehicles, and one then struck another car but that driver was not hurt, police said.

The minivan driver fled the crash scene on foot and was captured a half-hour later. Police identified him as Andrew Thomas Gallo, 22, of Riverside, and said he had a suspended license because of a previous drunken driving conviction.

Preliminary results indicated Gallo’s blood-alcohol level was above the legal limit, police Lt. Kevin Hamilton said.

He could face charges including vehicular manslaughter or possibly murder, Hamilton said.

Adenhart died in surgery at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center. A 27-year-old man in the car and the driver, 20-year-old Courtney Frances Stewart of Diamond Bar, were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Truly sad day for the Angels organization

oh damn i havent checked up on mlb news or anything today so i just read now about the death of Adenhart.

the guy who hit them will surely get a heavy sentence as he ran a red light, fled the scene, driving with a suspended liscence and was over the limit

No joke, this season is depressing. It started off great, but it seems like the Angels can't catch a break of any kind. Nick's death, three of the Angel's best pitchers are injured, their best player vlad is out for 1-2 months, even Dustin Moseley possibly being injured, as well as a bullpen that has absolutely been torched for no reason.

The one good thing you can say about this team is that they have depth, but damn it is getting tested real early in the season. Darren Oliver is starting for the Angels, he hasn't done that since 2004... They'll probably just start him until Lackey or Santana can come back. Maicier Izturiz, who is absolutely clutch with RISP was the DH for the team for the first game against the Twins. While being clutch, if that guy is your DH, you know you have trouble on the team. The Angels might go with Napoli as DH and bring up another catcher from the minors, or just go with Gary Matthews SuckmoreJR to fill in the role.

No other team in the league has had to deal with as much adversity as the Angels so far this season. They're trying their best to not fall apart, and it's a real testament to the staff and the organization for keeping them competitive night after night. If the bullpen didn't suck, they'd easily have 3 or more wins early this season.
