just my random thought on the Godfathers...

...why many ppl really consider the Godfather II superior to the 1st one???
IMO Godfather I is clearly better than its sequel.
- it is more dramatic, more action packed and flows as a single whole that you didn't even notice that it's 3 hours long. Simply epic to say it in a few words!
- it had more balanced, more expressive Pacino. He was better in the 1st imo since he overacted in Godfather II sometimes.
- there was James Caan in it who perfectly portrayed Sonny Corleone
- and above all there was an absolutely legendary and flawless Marlon Brando as Don Vito!

First let me make it clear I believe I is also superior to II. But if you're asking me to make a case for why II is better.

I'd have to say it's mainly due to De Niro. He absolutely knocked young Vito out of the park. Those flashback scenes could be pasted together to make a 1 hour mini movie, and it would still blow my mind away. I honestly thought I was living in 1940 New York. It's so beautifully done, with the direction, art design, cinematography, and the acting with the accents.

I mean come on, how bad ass is De Niro when he tells the black hand to stick it and only pays him half his protection money? And then muffles his gun with a towel, the light bulb flickers in the hallway, and Vito just blasts him in the head. Just amazing.

And I always credited the over acting of Pacino in part II as from the direction of Coppola. I'm pretty sure FFC wanted to create that contrast between how Vito did work, and how Michael did work. The contrast of passive vs agressive. The ending of part II stands to be one of the best ending in film history. Feeling sorrow for michael can only occur by witnessing his brutality, and then his eventual loniness.

So yeah, I still think part I is better. But you can't discount part II like that. Saying it's an amazing film would be an understatment.

I'm gonna have to write a blog about the Godfather one day. It's literally gonna be a discertation...

I also agree I is superior to II. The flashback scenes and De Niro are the only parts of II I really enjoyed. Pacino as Michael really didn't do it for me.

I don't know if I agree or I don't - but I think the 1st movie had a much greater ending, the 2nd one with killing Roth, and Fredo at the end wasn't so so shocking, it wasn't as great as a ending...But yeeah Godfather II had de Niro's great acting

well let me tell you Venom I agree that these flashbacks with De Niro were best thing in Godfather II. They don't rise above the rest of the movie and only add more flow to it so I thought that FFC did a great on that. It's just that the rest of the movie is overextended, very slow paced and less dramatic than the 1st Godfather.
But the ending scene of the 2nd one is indeed one of the best ever made and probably my fav along with the Deer Hunter one. It just perfectly sums up all the Corleone characters in only like 5 or so minutes spell which is quite amazing!

tbh ive never actually watched more then half an hour of Godfather I and ive tried to watch it so many times when it was on tv but i just got so bored with it i always just changed channels. I always hear people saying how good the movies are, i'll try and rent them out 1 day and force myself to sit through all of them

Yeah I completely agree. And like I said, don't get me wrong. The first is far superior to II in almost every way possible. I just wanted to make a case for the part II.

And to fresh, please, you have to watch the movies. But don't watch them on TV. It's just too long with commercials and everything gets broken up. You gotta watch part one is a straight 3 hour slot. It's complex, so the first viewing you might not even fully appreciate it/understand it. I know I didn't, and I know many others didn't either. But the direction, acting, lighting, camera movement, everything is completely amazing. So give them a shot one day.

I cant argue with you... Godfather I was the better of the two... I have a lot of friends who think otherwise but I still think the first was the best. Dont get me wrong Godfather II a great follow up...

you shouldn't force yourself to watch a movie especially a classic like The Godfather. Maybe its just not your type of movies. U really have to be into mafioso ****s to enjoy those type of movies. This not an action movie, its just mobsters handling their business yadanamean. I love those movies. All you have to do is sit in your couch, learn about how real gangsters talk business in their Italian accent.
