My opinion it's not only more beautiful visually (which is kind of obvious) but also is more subtle and has more substance to it. It is probably not so well written as TDK (although there were a few useless dumb jokes and few cliche phrases in it) and doesn't have as many great catch-words but it has a more sophisticated story-telling although which is probably some ppl didn't like it.
Watchmen is more bold and experimental than TDK and expands the boundaries of that new "dark & serious" tendency in superhero movies further than TDK did imo.

I'm with you in a lot of ways. It is probably in my top five films of 2009 so far. I love the movie. I think it has an Oscar worthy performance from Jackie Earle Haley and they translated the most poignant scenes of the film flawlessly to the screen (Dr. Manhatten on Mars is one of my favorite scenes of all time). Zach Snyder did a great job with the project and I think it's safe to say that it's critical and boxoffice reception did not do the film justice.
However, while I don't have any particular problems with these things, I do feel there was room for improvement in a few aspects. Watchmen follows the graphic novel TOO closely. Not all of Rorscach's dialogue sounds good on screen. I mean, it's called an adaptation for a reason....Same with certain shots...they don't all work well outside a comic book panel.
The fight scenes for Silk Spectre and Nite Owl should have been set up and executed better because there are times when it felt corney (her running and stepping on his back to leap into the air and kick someone...

) . I think they also should have considered casting someone else for the roles of Silk Spectre I & II. Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman butchered a few lines...I mean it didn't ruin their scenes or anything. It would just be like an improvement in the same way Maggie Gyllenhaul was an improvement (acting wise) over Katie Holmes. And the music chosen for the sex scene between Nite Owl and Silk Spectre was AWFUL! It did not match the mood they set out to create.
The Dark Knight has it's problems as well, but those are fewer and more miniscule ones imo. For Watchmen, the opening credits are very impressive, the story is great, the acting is good, the special effects are top notch, and the film is very enjoyable to watch as a whole. I agree it is more daring and innovative, and sadly it got burned because of that innovation. You will never see any big-budgeted R-rated superhero films again...which is fine imo because if they are as edgy as TDK then it is not necessary. Watchmen NEEDED to be R-rated though.
I'm sure it will not get the respect it deserves...it will have it's fans and it's detractors (Spyda should be on here any moment to tear it down), but ultimately I feel it deserves a mention in the top three or four superhero movies (along with TDK, Batman Begins, Spiderman 2 [no Iron Man...the climax was too sloppy]).
