You guys ever wonder why...

...when British people sing (and I mean sing-sing, not just say some words to music, or rap in some instances) their voices sound the same as more Western English? I'm not gonna say American or Canadian because even those vary, but it seems like British singers have their accents glossed-over once they start singing, as if "our" English is the "right" way to speak and sing.

I know there's a few exceptions to this, like Dizzee Rascal and The Arctic Monkeys that I can name off the top of my head, but others like The Beatles and Leona Lewis all seem to follow the above logic.

I'd love to hear your guys' thoughts on this.

I don't know why but that happens with us and Cypriots. We both speak greek but people from Cyprus have a heavy accent on their in between talks. On their songs on the other hand they sing like any normal Greek would Go figure...

Only singer I can think of is James Blunt but I'm not even sure if he's from England.. all I know is he's hella annoying. Where I work they always play the same radio station with the same music over and over.. I hear his whiny music about 3 or 4 times a day.

Cause in Western music we don't really pronounce the R when we sing or we pronounce it softer than when we would if we were talking.

A lot of the British singers I hear, you can tell they're British. However, there is some you'd never know until someone told you.

Jamie T?

I think its more the nature of the music industry over on your end. The British music which is picked up by record labels in America and Canada is usually fitting with the trend of what your public is used to listening to and obviously British voices will only be liked by a certain group of people, whereas singers like Leona Lewis are chosen because theres not much distinction between your accents and her's. If you came over here you'd hear all sorts of British accents from artists, even in the mainstream.

Also it tends to only be southern British people that sing in that "Americanized" way. Up north (where I am) bands tend to sing in their speaking voices (like the Arctic Monkeys, Pigeon Detectives etc...)
