Lets talk about the 09 Freshmen!! - 03-28-2009, 07:37 PM

Wale, B.o.B, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, Corey Gunz, Blu, Mickey Factz, Ace Hood, Curren$y, & KiD CuDi.

These dudes back in early 09 made the XXL Magazine cover & story about the the 10 hottest new rappers to hop onto the Hip-Hop scene for '09.

Now its almost April & some of these dudes people have known since before 09. What I wanna know is what you think of these guys, who's your fav, who surprised or dissapointed you, do you think anybody else should have been added to the list, & should anybody be removed from the list.

I'll post my opinion/answers to the questions later. I just wanna see what you guys say. Remeber the questions & post away.

The 10 Freshmen. Hip Hop Lovers Beware.

The other moderators can decide if they want to leave this thread open. I honestly don't care. Discussion is discussion and not that many people saw the old thread.

Pretty legit list. I don't want to choose who to replace, because that would be way too subjective. Plus, it'd be too hard, and I'm laaazy.

Cudi and Asher Roth are already blowing up with their singles. Day N Nite and I Love College are both top 10 singles right now.

Wale is right on the verge of blowing up, I think.

What do I think:

I never listened to anything from B.O.B ( I guess Bobby Ray now) or Mickey Factz but the other 8 I can say soemthign about them. I mean the other 8 can really rap! Ace Hood too a lot of people ask why Hood is even on here well he's there for a reason & his flow is the reason. Songs I've heard him on are Cash Flow, That song with Akon & DJ Khaled, & I heard him freestyle on Hero by Nas & man that **** was fire. Curren$y been rappin & has been known for years now I always thought he should have never left YOung Money but it seems like he's onto bigger & better things honestly though now that I think about it if he would have stayed his name wouldnt even be here cause look at Drake. Charles Hamilton & Kid Cudi to me the best tow out the group & whats crazy Cudi has one mixtape! What I like most is how both of them are what call "on some other ****" they rap about stuff you wouldnt normally hear or their beats as well lol Charles Hamilton made a song about LAcey Duvalle & has Sonic in his beats. Wale to me only has a couple of good songs like if I listen to a mixtape of him I probably wouldnt like it but a random song I find here & there I might just. Like the ones he did with YOung Chris, Nike Boots, & Mr. Carter freestyle (which he wrecked!). Asher ROth love the way he flows & he knows how to make a good commercial song. I Love College & La di da (I think thats the name) both great songs I could see on MTV or hear on the radio. Plus the Eminem comparisons arent right cause they dnt even rap about the same stuff or sound the same jus cause hes white lol. Corey Gunz can freestly hands down but can he make good songs I have no idea time will only tell. Blu I really dont like.

who surprised me/dissapointed:

Well Charles Hamilton, Kid Cudi, & Asher Roth really surprised me because I had never heard of these guys until I took the time out to listen to them & two out of the three became one of my artits (C. Hamiltion & Cudi). Curren$y too I heard some songs off mixtapes from him on a friends myspace & they was hot like for real even though I heard him rap before when he was with Wayne but damn they was hot. That dude Blu really wasnt good to me imo I thought his mixtape was gonna be somethin great but I wasnt feelin it.

who would you remove/add:

I couldnt remove anybody to me thats not right to do that to these men cause all their hard work shouldnt be renounced by a 16 year old lol. But I do think they could have made it longer with these three artists. Listed from #1 most def. should be on & #3 should be on but as well though.

#1 - Drake
#2 - Young Chris
#3 - Jay Rock

Drake has had the most buzz outta these 10 dudes & ppl talk about how some will bring Hip-Hop back well Drake has his Hip-Hop where he likes it & on top of that has a smooth blend of R&B singing! Best of both worlds because he wouldn tneed that guest appereance to make a good record when he could just lay down the track himself. Both his mixtapes were fire & his appereance on the Dedication 3 was ridiculous. Noso he could rap & sing & on top of that makes the good original songs.

Young Chris been around for a min with the Young Gunz but now he's solo & is better than ever. Comparisons to Jay-Z & ppl sayin Jay took a bit of Chris swag idk sounds like beast to me. Young C's mixtapes have been hot really none dissapoint & once aagin he has those hits. Anybody can flow but can u make good songs & he does just that.

Jay Rock is a new dude out the West Coast reppin Watts & the best person you can compare him to is The Game & that might be his downfall becasue ppl might see it as well The Game has been there & doen that what else is there left to do you know. but thats not the case.

I'm gonna give you the thanks for putting some solid effort into a post. Something I lack nowadays. I'll just give a run down on each of the artists (less in depth than yours).

Ace Hood: I haven't listened to the dude much (that kind of music isn't really my steez), but from what I've heard, I can understand why he appeals to his audience.

Curren$y: Probably won't blow up, and like CK said in the other thread, he seems like more of a mixtape rapper, but all further judgements will be made when his new album comes out. The songs that have released so far sounded good to me.

Mickey Factz: I love Mickey (no homo). Goes in over some beats you wouldn't expect and brings something unique to the industry. Everything he puts out I like.

Asher Roth: When he first started to get noticed, yeah, he did sound like Eminem (not just because he was white). He kind of separated himself from that, and I'm starting to dig the material he puts out a lot more. I Love College is an awesome party song.

Charles Hamilton: I'm kind of in a love/hate relationship with him. Some of the stuff he puts out, I really like, and then there's some stuff I can't stand. A lot of people can't get by the voice, but dude's definitely got talent.

B.o.B. (aka Bobby Ray): Joins Mickey Factz in my top two on the list. Got his whole Andre 3K thing going on, and makes music that can appeal to everybody. Can't remember him ever dissapointing.

Kid Cudi: A bit of a drama queen, but at the end of the day he puts out good music. Been listening to him since A Kid Named Cudi dropped, and although he's starting to get a bit overplayed now with hits like "Day N Nite", I'm still a fan.

Corey Gunz: Haven't listened to a whole lot of Gunz, but he just seems like a freestyle/mixtape rapper to me. He's got a lot of talent, so he might be able to surprise me, but as it stands right now, that's how it's gonna be.

Wale: I think it was CK that put me on when he was going around rockin that "mixtape about nothing" sig. Can some of the Wale followers let me know where he's been. I could be completely wrong, but it just doesn't seem like he's been putting out much music lately. Is he working on an album right now or something? I want to hear more from him.. NAO.

Blu: I don't know why I don't give this guy a lot more plays. He definitely deserves it. He might be the best rapper on the entire list. I got Below the Heavens, Johnson & Jonson and Blu's V-Day mixtape there (I think it was from valentines day) and they're all dope, so check the dude out.

Not sure if I left anybody out, but whatever. I wasn't really trying to give you in depth info on the rappers. Just wanted to give my opinion on them.
