Exactly. Obama's a Chicago native and lifetime Bulls/MJ fan. he has a natural bias that goes along with that. I mean I'll always have a favoritism for Magic and Kareem when they're discussed among the all time greats because they faught for my home city and brought championships to the LA area and fanbase.
More then presidents and fans who have no experience of on the court battle, I'll take the opinions of basketball greats like Pippen. even though Pippen fought side by side Jordan in the chicago glory days, he says now he can't say who is better between kobe and MJ. He said they both were the best of their times.
Right now everyone looks back at the Jordan era with fond memories. they talk about that era and Jordan the 6 rings. But at the end of the day everyone will look back at the kobe years with fond memories as well. The Lakers dynasty and their battles with the spurs, the drama and hype that surrounded kobe and shaq, kobe's climb back to being a championship team without a star studded cast, the kobe vs lebron debate, etc. Just like Michael Jackson showed us, you don't really appreciate something until it's gone, and when this kobe era is overwith he'll get more of the recognition and appreciation he deserves
