Spurs had injuries problems only once that I recall (in 2000, Duncan). But I could be missing something here.
Phil coached for 9 of the 10 possible seasons. Popovich all 10.
Phil had 6 finals appearances in 9 seasons. Popovich 4 out of 10.
Both won 4 times.
Popovich had 1 coach of the year award. Phil none.
In 5 matchups, Phil won 4, including 2 when the Spurs had homecourt.
And as for the Lakers always having better teams, I desagree. For the first 5 seasons of the decade, yes. But the next 10 belonged to the Spurs. Not to mention they had arguably the best power foward of all time for the whole decade.
It's close, but I'd give it to Phil. But Popovich is a great coach too, right behing Phil IMO.
