Kobe is on a different level than other players. Michael is on an even further level. The young fans are all behind Kobe but they didn't watch Jordan and the older people who have seen both Kobe and Jordan will mostly pick Jordan 9 out of 10 times as the better player.

Beyond the physical and the stats, the one major difference is that Michael was always competitive and determined. You can see it in his eyes and his swagger that his heart was in the game and he lived and breathed basketball. With Kobe it seems like he just wants to win because he always has something to prove. To prove he can win a ring without Shaq. To prove he can score more points in a game, to do this and that.

1. Why does there have to be a "best" player? Each player has strengths and weaknesses, and it seems to me that there are a group of players that are elite, but I just don't see why there has to be one above all. Even if I had to pick one, I still don't see how Kobe is it.

2. This isn't the And-1 league. If this were an individual competition, Kobe would probably be the consensus pick for best player. But this is 5 on 5 team basketball, and that means to me that other players like Tim Duncan can be put into the conversation of best in the league.

Rick Fox, former teammate of Kobe, recently talked about him when he came into the league. He said he had, from the beginning, a me-first attitude. It was all about Kobe and his focus was mainly about how he could make his mark on the league and be the best he could be. He said Kobe's mindset would have been better suited for an individual sport like boxing. You could even see that in his young career, when he was a gunner who was always looking to score. To me, Kobe is a great individual talent, but that talent doesn't necessarily always translate that well to the team aspect, and he also doesn't deliver in the most important games, and that to me is why he's not unequivocally the best in the game.
One of the major instigator to comparisons is individual success. Another would be their god-given attributes (height, weight).. This is why we begin to compare one another.. MJ was the greatest player to play basketball. Period. Kobe is now one of the best players in the league. With other similarities like their success, height and weight and even skills and basketball IQ, comparisons are inevitable.. 10-yr olds arguing in every thread is quite annoying..I'm not saying all the comparison isn't annoying but I wouldn't want it to stop. I'm just looking forward to a day someone can convince to me or any of us that there is a single player with more accomplishments and most importantly played the game of basketball better than MJ.

Kobe still got lots of ball games left in him..true comparisons will begin once his career is over..

I certainly am. Kobe isn't as good period, it really isn't arguable.

I want to see one person give a legit argument for how Kobe is better than Jordan.

hell yeah i am. i'm sure it bothers the hell out of him too. put yourself in kobe's shoes, would you want to be compared to someone else or would you rather be your own person? you clock in hours and hours of sweat and training only to have it mean for nothing cause someone says you're being or acting like another player. given that jordan was a great player, he opened the floodgates to greatness. but don't let that take away anything from kobe, he's very good at what he does too. mj played in a different era, he set the tone... kobe plays in the era that jordan's presence caused... and now every guard that's in the game "wanted to be like mike", and kobe is the only player that stands out from all of them

When Michael was in the league, he was regarded as BY FAR the BEST player in the league.
When Kobe's been in the league, he has been regarded as one of the BEST players in the league.

See the difference
