Lightbulb UNC on top of the recruiting world right now.... - 08-27-2008, 01:04 PM

Quote:
1. North Carolina
2009 commits (National rank)
PF John Henson (6)
PG Dexter Strickland (17)
SG Leslie McDonald (55)
PF David Wear (68)
PF Travis Wear (69) The Tar Heels have sprinted out of the blocks better than any program in the country. Roy Williams and staff have locked up five players ranked in the top 70 nationally. Henson is the gem, while Strickland and McDonald are the backcourt of future of the backcourt. The Wear twins give UNC some size inside as well as provide long-term help for the rotation.

2. Villanova
2009 commits (National rank)
PF Mouphtaou Yarou (14)
PG Maalik Wayns (25)
PF Isaiah Armwood (62) Who says the Wildcats are just a guard-oriented program? Villanova has two impressive post players in Yarou and Armwood to complement Wayns, one of the best floor generals in the country. With three players ranked in the top 65, the future of Villanova hoops is in good hands.

3. Georgia Tech
2009 commits (National rank)
PG Mfon Udofia (36)
SG Glen Rice (48)
PF Kammeon Holsey (77)
SF Brian Oliver (129) The Yellow Jackets wanted to lock up the foundation of the class early and did so with a quick run of pledges in June and July. Oliver was the first to pick the school and did so in mid-June. Holsey announced at the Nike Peach Jam, and a week later Udofia announced in Las Vegas and Rice in Orlando. Staying in-state was a priority.

4. Illinois
2009 commits (National rank)
SG Brandon Paul (44)
SG D.J. Richardson (57)
SG Joseph Bertrand (116)
PF Tyler Griffey (127) If there was any question about the Illini's ability to recruit in-state talent, the class of 2009 has proven that the program still can lock up the locals. The future looks bright, particularly in the backcourt. The trio of Paul, Richardson and Bertrand is a major upgrade at guard, while Griffey has the tools to be a grinder down low.

5. N.C. State
2009 commits (National rank)
PG Lorenzo Brown (43)
PF Richard Howell (51)
SG Scott Wood (126) The Wolfpack love the Interstate-85 pipeline to Atlanta. After securing J.J. Hickson two years ago, Sidney Lowe and his staff have mined Georgia hard for talent. The results have been positive in 2009 with Brown and Howell. Both should help from Day One. A mini-Indiana connection also is growing. Last year the team landed Julius Mays. This year, Wood is the latest Hoosier to head south to Raleigh.

6. Louisville
2009 commits (National rank)
PF Rakeem Buckles (40)
PG Peyton Siva (49)
SG Mike Marra Rick Pitino and staff have already filled several needs in the 2010 class with these commitments. Buckles is one of the most intriguing players in the class because of his size, raw ability and versatility at power forward. Siva is similar to the scoring point guards the Cardinals have relied on in the past. Marra is an athletic wing with great range on his jumper.

7. Connecticut
2009 commits (National rank)
C Alex Oriakhi (21)
SF Jamal Coombs (65) It seems as if Oriahki and Coombs have been committed to the Huskies for a decade. Both pledged to Jim Calhoun early in the recruiting process, and over time they have improved tremendously. Oriahki could be a McDonald's All-America, while Coombs has developed into one of the top wings in the nation. Look for both to make contributions in Storrs.

8. Marquette
2009 commits (National rank)
SF Jeronne Maymon (46)
PG Junior Cadougan (60)
SF Erik Williams (99)
SG Dwight Buycks New coach Buzz Williams wasted little time making his mark. The Golden Eagles locked up local stars in Maymon and Buycks, and went to Texas and took advantage of Williams' roots for Williams and Cadougan.

9. Indiana
2009 commits (National rank)
SG Maurice Creek (59)
SF Derek Elston (98)
PG Jordan Hulls (106)
PF Bobby Capobianco Creek is the major score in the class. He was high on Marquette when Tom Crean was at the helm and carried over his fondness when the Hoosiers hired the former Golden Eagles' head man. Creek should help from Day One in the guard-oriented style that Crean employs. Indiana fans love that Crean is recruiting the local kids. Hulls, a Bloomington native, embodies the Hoosier spirit with his play. So does Capobianco, an Ohio forward. Elston, a holdover from the Sampson regime, missed the summer because of injury.

10. UAB
2009 commits (National rank)
PF DeMarcus Cousins (2)
SG Casey Mitchell
SG David Murray The Blazers have an answer for Memphis in Cousins. In fact, they may have an answer for just about every program in the nation. Cousins, a Birmingham native who is playing in Mobile now, is one of the true elite talents in the class. His addition alone gives UAB a major shot in the arm. Adding Mitchell, a big time junior college scorer, and Murray is key in the backcourt.

UP NEXT:
11. CLEMSON: PF Milton Jennings (12), PF Devin Booker (137), SG Donte Hill
12. ARIZONA: SF Solomon Hill (28), SF Mike Moser (83), PG Reger Dowell (135)
13. KANSAS STATE: PF Wally Judge (23), SG Rodney McGruder (91), Jordan Henriquez
14. PITTSBURGH: PF Dante Taylor (24), SF Lamar Patterson (109), SF Darnell Dodson
15. BAYLOR: PF Cory Jefferson (33), PG A.J. Walton (132)

No **** with that. There was a time during last season where the recruits were rolling in like never before. In like a two week span we got 4 or 5 huge prospects to commit. Greatest weeks of my year thus far.

Checking:
Big John commits on 01/03/2008
Wear twins commit on 01/04/2008
Reggie commits on 01/09/2008
Dex commits on 01/13/2008

That's three five stars and two four stars. There are articles out there calling that the biggest recruiting job in such a small time frame, ever. John Henson may arguably be the best player from the 09 class. Hell, Reggie might be the best player from the 10, with all due respect to Knight and Thompson. McDonald is getting comparisons to Jordan, way out of line, because of the student of the game he is, Dex is the perfect type of combo guard for the NBA, and the Wear twins are increasingly talented and mobile. Between the 09-10 classes, every single player could end up in the NBA, all but one are expected. Of course Ryan Kelly might be added to the 09 class and Smith is the big target on for Roy in 10... Either way I still stand by saying all will end up in the NBA.

These rankings will change big-time once the top players commit.
#1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20 are still uncomitted. Kinda ridiculous to even have recruiting class rankings at this point. That's 14 of the top 20 that are unsigned. These rankings will change big time. Roy is and has always been one helluva recruiter...UNC will always have one of the top classes. It's gonna be hard to beat out KU's 05 class...#8 Julian Wright...#12 Mario Chalmers...#13 Brandon Rush...#28 Micah Downs

I'm going off Rivals rankings...Scout sucks.

Can you imagine Nova's recruiting class had Evans come as well? 2002 would be a second I'd say. Speaking of which, it's a damn shame that 2002 recruiting class never got any heavy March burn. They what all the tools to make a deep run but lacked big men (as always) plus Curtis Sumpter's injury that year plagued them majorly. They would've been a F4 team that season imo had it not been for Curtis' red shirting.

Scout>Rivals for basketball. History speaks the truth.

02 UNC class... #1 rated PG and SG, #5 rated PF. Class won a championship and even Sanders and Grant helped the team out quite often. That class is the main reason why people shouldn't bash Doh.

Then you have those Dean Smith classes towards the end of his career. Sheed, McInnis, and Stack were all Mc'D AA in 93. 1998 had a good one too with Curry, Lang and Capel.

Actually I am sure many Carolina fans will admit that one of the most talented recruiting class to ever come through UNC, and one of the most talented ever, might be the 06 class. You have Wright, Ellington, and Lawson all number one in their position, fifth ranked center in Deon, eleventh ranked center in Flex (why USC?), and just getting Will Graves to qualify is amazing in itself. Going by Rivals if you must, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 41st, and 72nd ranked players. Although I will give you that you have a championship with that class and I will almost go to say that this class has underachieved (at least to exceptions). Although one year can change all of that

idk bout Scout being better than Rivals...maybe I'm just biased cuz Rivals website looks way more professional than Scout. Scout looks like it was started by my little brother. I'll give ya the 02 class...that group was stacked top to bottom.

Look like my Heels have done it again. Though after the top recruits commit I thank the rankings will drastically change. But it seems that the heels have built a recruiting class to keep them as national contenders for years to come.

We are done with the '09 class since freaking Kelly signed with dook. In '10 Roy has to decide between Roscoe, Barnes, and Smith. Even though Roscoe is rated higher, people are saying that Josh Smith will be the next great big man, ala Dwight level (which I doubt). The thing is that Roscoe and Barnes are both wings which is the only hole in the 2010 lineup and there should only be one scholly available if things go as expected. Unless Ed Davis leaves after his soph year which then the Heels have to go for Smith to fill for Davis' leaving. However, I doubt Roy would know in time if he should go after Smith and he would probably be signed by then. Unless Davis pulls a Rashad and tells Roy he is leaving after the season no matter what, but that is doubtful as 09 will be the first year starting for Davis unlike Rashad who started his whole career and tore it up while doing so.

Personally, I say screw the wings and go after the big man as he's apparently something special. A true banger in a time where most big men are becoming face up shooters. Take a wing from the '11 class and play with a small hole for one season.
