An Early Look at the Stars of Tomorrow -

Jake Long (Miami Dolphins): "While the words weren't audible from the stands, it's not difficult to imagine what the topic of discussion was. And it's likely that the Dolphins entire offensive line heard a similar "you've got to do better" lecture following Sunday's practice session, which featured about half-a-dozen would-be sacks like Long's. Rookies Jake Long and Phillip Merling got into a bit of a tussle at Phins camp on Monday. Of course, these are two guys trying to make an impression on their new team ... but it was a bit surprising since they have been best buddies off the field.
Chris Long (St. Louis Rams): "I think he's doing OK, and I think he's got a ways to go," Haslett said. "He picks up things fast and he's really athletic, so that's not an issue. We just need him to understand what the offence is trying to do to him, so when he gets in a game he'll have an understanding. Long's arrival has made a distinct impact on James Hall, the incumbent at right end who was briefly released by the Rams in a salary cap move before re-signing in March. Hall, hampered by an ankle injury that the team kept quiet last year, has been a terror early in camp."
Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons): "Ryan reportedly drove the first-team offense to two touchdowns, one of them during a two-minute drill, the Atlanta Falcons’ web site reports. Ryan is impressing early however, and his chemistry with Roddy White, who caught both touchdown passes, has to be working to his favor."
Darren McFadden (Oakland Raiders): "The buzz around camp, plenty of it anyway, has been on rookie phenom Darren McFadden, who was called "too good to be true" by a couple people on Friday. That's in every way. The media say he's a nice guy. The coaches say he's a great student of the game and a tireless worker. Other Raiders say he's a great teammate. There are a lot of fast people out there, but very, very few running backs that can go outside and run routes. ... It's one of those things, if for some reason you couldn't play one of them at running back, they'd go out and start for you at receiver."
Glenn Dorsey (Kansas City Chiefs): "I know everyone wants to see Glenn Dorsey become a "man child" right away. They want him to be the next Warren Sapp and then some. Well I watched the defensive line go through about seven drills. Each drill is designed to train the player to react a certain way depending on the action in front of him. From defending against a cut-block, to standing up the guard or center, to reacting to the draw, delivering the club and the rip. It's very likely that a d-lineman will have to execute about three or four of those moves in the span of 4 or 5 seconds ... and make it look like one sweeping motion. It's hard folks. It's all rhythm and coordination that takes time to get rooted in. That's why Tommy Harris, Albert Haynesworth, Marcus Stroud and John Henderson all averaged between 1.3 and 2.8 tackles a a game their rookie years. So don't be quick to judge Dorsey and don't blow off Tyler and McBride based on what happened their rookie years. Kansas City top draft pick Glenn Dorsey sprained his left knee during practice Saturday."
Vernon Gholston (New York Jets): "LB Vernon Gholston is "swimming" so far, according to coach Eric Mangini, as he tries to catch up. Gholston missed the first day of practice as well as the prior week of rookie orientation." I haven't stumbled across any info on Gholston's training camp thus far, other than him getting a banged up knee, which wasn't that serious, and him showing his athleticism we all knew about.
Sedrick Ellis (New Orleans Saints): "This year's No. 1 pick was late reporting, but quick in establishing himself as a force up the middle. Ellis was so explosive and heady that it is hard to believe he missed as much camp as he has. He rushed the passer extremely well and moved laterally down the to blow up running plays and a screen. Using a first and a third round pick to get him may seem cheap one day."
Derrick Harvey (Jacksonville Jaguars): "Del Rio called Harvey's contract demands "ridiculous" and "outrageous." He then followed up with the requisite "he's falling behind" and "it's time to get into camp" quotes. That should do the trick. Expect to see Harvey sign on the line which is dotted fairly soon." To my knowledge, he still hasn't signed.
Keith Rivers (Cincinatti Bengals): "The one negative to the camp has been the absence of top draft choice Keith Rivers due to a contract holdout. Rivers, an outside linebacker from the University of Southern California, has missed the first five practice sessions. The Bengals are counting on him to be a focal point of new defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer's 4-3 scheme, but until that time Brandon Johnson is filling the role."
Jerod Mayo (New England Patriots): I don't have much on Mayo either, other than he has been impressive throughout training camp. He's shown good speed and quickness, but that's nothing interesting. The only news I could scrounge up, was that he had "the play of camp" the other day. He stopped Maroney on the one yard line with a big shoulder hit, giving the defense the win.

This is mostly just typical rookie news blurbs, but I figured I'd post anyway so you guys wouldn't have to bother looking. I'll probably include the top twenty players drafted in the next few days.

Can't wait to see Chris Long play...I'm guessing he'll play in our first pre-season game. What I'm hearing so far is that he's great physically, now he has to focus on reading plays and all that.

Yeah, that's basically it. He just has to get accustomed to the same thing as all rookies that come into the league. While we're talking about Long, I realized today that him and your holy Poz look alike (kind of?).

Nahh, that's Chris Long. I kid, that's obviously the Poz. They actually don't look that much alike now that I look at their pictures again. I think it's the hair, or the whole being white thing.

Nice thread. I'm going to be watching closely on how most of these rookies progress in their careers and more importantly first seasons. It's going to be exciting watching Jake and Chris Long go at it and I wish the best for Matt Ryan aswell. He looks to be a great competitor.
