yep like already stated a false start is when the receiver (whether he is on or off the LOS) makes a small movement that would simulate the play starting so pretty much any small jerking action would be called a false start. Usually you can tell between a motion and a false start because the WR/TE/FB/RB will turn to which way he is supposed to be going and the qb will usually make some sort of signal for the player to move.
whenever i play as WR or help out some of the less experienced guys i always tell them to watch the ball and not worry abot the snap count because sometimes you might forget, the qb's timing on his snap calling might be off or the crowd noise might be too loud so by just watching the ball and going off as soon as it has been snapped should eliminate false starts.......i always kinda laugh when i see it happen in the NFL but its just one of those things where you try and get a good burst and throw the defender off
