Factors of respect toward coaches (Question) - 08-03-2007, 04:14 PM

The key of this post is to gather information about what people/players/coaches respect of other coaches. I am doing a sort of investigation of what it’s mean to be a coach and I am reach the part of asking people all around the world what they respect about coaches. If you were be so kind of spending some time and read the next “Questions” I would be please. See the example below to see how to answer to the questions. I want you to think well and to answer me (as the example shows). If you want to extend your answer please be free to do so. I will made some sort of chart and explain it. Any questions just ask.Thanks for the time.

Name (or Nick if you don’t want to give your real name):
Your role/position in the team (player; coach; assistant; watcher, etc):
Which sport are you playing now? :
In which level are you playing? (Amateur; high school; university; pro; etc):

Steps:
1) From the list below picks 5 elements that you would respect from a coach.
2) From those 5 picks choose only 3 elements.
3) From those 3 picks choose only 1 element.

-LIST-
A-Prior experience as a player and success as a player
B-Prior experience as a coach and success as a coach
C-Good appearance (not if he is cute but if he is clean, etc)
D-Good live habits
E-Good habits of work (adjust to the schedules, efficiency)
F-Well organized (training camps, meetings, journeys)
G-Good communicator (He knows how to listen, He explains with clarity)
H-Availability [I don’t know if this is the exact word] (Always has time for the player)
I-Knowledge (He has tactical and technical knowledge)
J-Ability to teach (He knows how to teach)
K-High motivation (intensity, commitment)
L-Positive Mind (spirit, optimism, compliments)
M-Good bench coach (He does the necessary adjustments, analyzed and reacted as the game develop)
N-Good sense of humor (relaxed environment)
O-Good capacity of leadership (in the locker-room and during the game)
P-Good level of self-control (emotional control, it transmits calm and serenity)
Q-Desire to improve (He want to improve in every aspects)
R-Honest and fair with the players (He doesn’t show favoritism)
S-Open to the suggestions (flexible, listen to players suggestions)
T-Shows true interest in the players beyond the sport. (Shows knowledge and interest in their life outside the court)

Example:

Personally I respect coaches that motivate and guide players, particularly younger athletes and those from difficult backgrounds. A coach's primary responsibility should be to teach the game of basketball and to secondly to provide a mentor figure for his players. Different levels of play, require different aspects of input in a players life. Using a real life example I'd say Ken Carter, you've probably all seen the film coach carter, thats really how I think coaches should help players to mature not only as basketball players, but also as academics and people.
