Re: Jumpers knee questions

Well the action you need to take is based on the degree of injury it is, I.e how severe the pain is.

Grade 1: Pain only after training

Continue training but apply ice or cold therapy to the injury after each training session. Cold therapy can be applied by by ice massage or the use of ice packs. It is important the cold is applied at the point of pain on the tendon.
Wear a heat retainer or support.
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques and advise on rehabilitation. An eccentric strengthening programme is generally recommended.

Grade 2: Pain before and after exercise but pain reduces once warmed up.

Modify training activities to reduce the load on the tendon. Stop jumping or sprinting activities and replace them with steady running or swimming / running in water if necessary.
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques and advise on rehabilitation.

Grade 3: Pain during activity which prevents you from training / performing at your best.

Rest completely from the aggravating activity. Replace it with swimming / running in water (if pain allows).
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques and advise on rehabilitation.

Grade 4: Pain during every day activities which may or may not be getting worse.
Rest for a long period of time (at least 3 months!).
See a sports injury specialist / therapist who can apply sports massage techniques for patella tendonitis / tendinopathy and advise on rehabilitation.
If the knee does not respond to rehabilitation then consult an Orthopaedic Surgeon as surgery may be required.

based on what you said the best thing i think would just be to refrain from heavy jumping based activities like basketball and plyometrics for a few weeks, and regularly apply an ice pack after any activity you do, also invest in a knee support.

Re: Jumpers knee questions

Hmmm, since a couple of weeks my left knee feels a bit weaker than my right, it doesn't really hurt and when i play ball i only feel it a bit when i jump off. I already let it rest for like a month but it hasn't improved a lot. It's not I made a wrong move or something, it just happened. If I play trough it could it aggravate the injury? What do you think?

Re: Jumpers knee questions

New research have discovered that high volume leg press at very slow speed will help on the jumpers knee, before under and after the injurie.. My friend has been doing this and other exercise to cure it for over half a year now (his was VERY bad though).. so my advise is to sit out and do exercises when you feel the slightest pain... Also while doing the leg press it's ok if it hurts a bit in your knee, but it cannot hurt the day after working out, then u gotta do it with lesser weight..

Re: Jumpers knee questions

Man i have had jumpers knee for over a year now on and off..

Right now its in my right knee, but it isn't that bad, I went to many physios and they just treated the tendon and told me to rest, when really they should of found out the cause of it..

I went to the state physio and they looked at everything past injuries and stance all that.. they found out that i had an imbalance in my core and legs... I didn't know how to use my glutes at all!!! while doin certain exercises, so i had to build them up and isolate them.. I was givin a machine and it told me which muscles i was using during the exercises.. it as put on my hips and glute... My hips were way too tight from all the extra stress i was putting there to compensate...

But yeah im still in the season atm... I waiting for it to end and them im working hard on strengthin my core and legs...

You better not neglect this injury trust me.. there a guy who used to play and hasn't for like 2 years now...

And it can develop into Tendinosis, which is fuked and its hard to ever recover.. Best thing to do is always ice after practice and games.. and find out what the cause is now before it gets worse... If it hurts while playing, don;t play..

Go see a GOOD physio, who finds out the cause

Re: Jumpers knee questions

this used to be the most painful thing, thank god i havent gotten it in like 2 years (knock on wood)

the only thing you can do is massage it, and use ice. I'm sure seraphs advice is a lot more detailed though

I agree, but it's much worse if it hurts the day after u play.. In the beginning it'll only hurt when playing, so it's a good idea to stop there. Unfortunately alot of players will play through because it only hurts a little while they play, and i gets better when they get warmed up... But if you continue to do this and it hurts the day after you are ****ed cuase it's so hard to get rid of again.. So my advice to everyone is to get rid of it while it is a minor problem, cause otherwise you may not be able to play ever again or atleast have a looooong break...

I dunno, its usually thee other way around isn't it?

Like It hurts the next day.. not while you are playing at all... that is the early stage..

Then when it starts to hurt during exercise aswell and limits you from performing, thats when it is bad

All I know is when my friend started rehabin' his knee, he was told that it couldn't hurt the day after the workout, but it was allright if it hurt a little while doing the exercise.. Maybe it's different when you get though, i don't know..
