“Alphabetical Slaughter is a weekly feature that has been employed to shine a light on artists, whom otherwise, may go unnoticed.”
Rewind your minds to a couple of months ago. A thread in the music section of our forums posed the question of “how important of a role does image play in the music industry”? Unfortunately, my answer was that I can be extremely judgmental and that image plays a significant role in whether or not I give artists a chance. This next entry in my Alphabetical Slaughter series was my latest victim. I have known about Grieves for a while now, being an avid Rhymesayers listener, but because the kid was white and decided to sport a lip ring and shaggy hair, I let him fall completely off my radar. I mean, everyone knows to be a successful rapper you need to have a clean fade and wear the latest spring line from (insert hipster brand here). Needless to say, I slept hard. An edgier, less whiny Outasight, Grieves brings us slick lyricism and smooth vocals on his latest release titled Together/Apart. It comes highly recommended (by me) as the soundtrack to your summer.
For those that are just now tuning in, I try to include three separate levels of artists: a hip hop act, a non-hip hop act, and a whatever the hell I please act. Inception. Thus said, the next act I would like to showcase is an indie group out of Lafayette. Their name is Givers and although they recently got their shine on The Jimmy Fallon Show, I am going to pretend I got to them first. Take it away, Tiffany Lamson.
And last but not least, a group quickly gaining fame in the DMV hip hop scene: Gods’Illa. A trio of brothers that overcome differing styles to produce high quality boom bap, Gods’Illa has received co-signs from hip hop greats such as 9th Wonder and now (more importantly).. yours truly. Get your hands on CPR: The Blend Tape ASAP.
